I started Leche Libre to empower women and support breastfeeding. I take my mission very seriously and I work hard to create a business which balances integrity with accessibility. I hate the idea of making my garments in far away places where women and possibly children are forced to work long hours just so we can have cheap clothing. I am very proud of the fact that I have worked hard to make my clothing in the US at a factory where I can have oversight to the working environment while keeping my prices as low and competitive as possible.
Often urban friends used to ethical fashion prices will tell me"your prices are fine Don't worry about it." This is why I worry about it. As I said above, Leche Libre is a mission of passion for me to empower as many women as possible to easily and stylishly breastfeed their babies. The lower I can ethically bring my cost, the more women who can afford my gear, the more women benefit, furthering the Leche Libre mission.
My experience in the Fashion Industry is that three main things affect the price.
- material cost
- manufacturing cost
- quantity ordered
The reason I'm doing this Kickstarter is to be able to up my the number of items I can order. The more money I can raise during this Kickstarter, the more items I can order, the more I can bring my retail costs down which would make a big difference to women.
I hate asking people for money. I like to do everything myself. I taught myself to do fashion design and business, reaching out to get coaching from time to time, but mostly pushing through on my own with an intense and at times crazy determination. All the while being the primary caregiver of two small babies.
But I'm on a mission. This Kickstarter is my time. The more I raise, the more women I can help. So I'm humbling myself. Please support this Kickstarter. I'm within a few hundred of 35K and I'm on a huge push to hit 40K by the end.
If you do not need breastfeeding apparel, please consider donating to the Leche Libre fund to create clothing for Chicago breastfeeding women in need. I'm working with the Chicago Volunteer Doulas to help low income women and teen moms, two groups of moms who face the most obstacles to successful breastfeeding with free Leche Libre gear.
By donating to this mission, you can help me create a world where women can breastfeed their babies easily while still maintaining a sense of who they are as individuals.
