#WorldBreastfeedingWeek is KILLING IT this year with their theme:
Lets Make It Work: A call for concerted global action to support women to combine breastfeeding and work. Whether a woman is working in the formal, non-formal or home setting, it is necessary that she is empowered in claiming her and her baby’s right to breastfeed. (We define work in its broadest form from paid employment, self-employment, seasonal and contract work to unpaid home and care work).
I LOVE how supportive this is of women and how deftly and evades the Stay At Home Moms vs. Working Mom debate which is so prevalent in the US. Whether you're working out of the home or you are working at home as your family's primary child care provider, let us never debate: YOU ARE A WORKING MOM!
When we disregard SAHM's work, we are actively working against women's rights by lowering the value for childcare work. It is important for us to support each other and value all of our roles as mothers and productive women in our societies. The needs of each are different and need to be treated as such, but one is not better then the other. Each role comes with its own barrel of problems. Whether you're struggling (and succeeding) in finding times and places within your work day to maintain an arduous pumping schedule or suffering from exhaustion and depression with no breaks in sight from your 24 hour nursing on demand schedule, its not easy. But you're doing it!
THANK YOU World Breastfeeding Week for, as always, BEING ON POINT!
To all the working moms out there (and that means ALL OF YOU) Leche Libre salutes you!
